Original Publication of Divine Right Video

As you can see above, the video on this web page was originally published on Youtube in July of 2020. Having just gone through the celebration of the fourth of July or Independence Day that year, I was pondering what is so special about Independence Day. What did we have to celebrate?

The Problem – Belief in the Divine Right of Kings

Many generations have passed since we Americans have had a king. After so long, it is hard for us to understand how important the King of England was to those who lived in America when we were British colonies. Before 1776 we had always had a king or queen. The Divine Right of Kings is the idea that God gives a king the right to rule over people whether those people like it or not. The Divine Right of Kings is false doctrine. In the video, I show that, in the Bible, in the book of first Samuel, we read that when the reign of kings over the house of Israel began, it began despite the Lord’s objection.

King George III

King George III

That is one reason that the Divine Right of Kings was already controversial before the reign of King George III began. In 1776, George III was king of England. By 1776, we had grow more and more concerned and frustrated about what King George was doing to us. In the video, I show that more than half of the Declaration of Independence is a list of the intolerable things that King George had done. More and more, in his effort to collect taxes, King George and his Parliamentary supporters ignored or even openly dismissed the idea that the British constitution set any limits on what the British government could do to colonists.

As a result, Americans completely rejected the already controversial idea of the Divine Right of Kings. The Declaration of Independent replaces the Divine Right of Kings with a fundamentally different political ideology by asserting “…that all men are created equal”. We should celebrate this on the fourth of July.
